Flamborough Sword Dance

Flamborough-by-the-sea

The Club performs most Wednesdays from May until September in the towns and villages of West Sussex, and occasionally, Hampshire. Most years we spend a weekend away at a meeting of The Morris Ring. We also travel to folk festivals on the continent, where over the years, we have made many friends.

In recent years the dancing has become a little less earnest than was once the case and the social side of the club has come to the fore. During the winter months Wednesday night finds us practicing at the Southbourne Club. Why not join us? Contact the Squire or Bagman for details (contact details on the homepage).

Our Morris repertoire includes dances from several Cotswold traditions including Bampton, Headington Quarry, Fieldtown and Bledington. Also 'Border' dances from Brimfield and Upton-on-Severn. We also perform a number of dances of our own creation, some in the Fieldtown style and four in our own tradition inspired by Border Morris.

Sword Dances we perform are the North Skelton Long Sword, the Newbiggin Rapper (with short two-handled swords) and Flamborough (with wooden swords, pictured above).

For a video of us in action, including a performance of the North Skelton, click here: The video was taken during our visit to The Richmond Arms, West Ashling in June 2008. There are no prizes for spotting the (deliberate) mistakes in the performance, but we are enjoying ourselves and entertaining our audience.
